1) Disable any virus detection software you may be using, unless it's Disinfectant. The patch won't work properly otherwise.
2) Make a back-up copy of the original Kaleidoscope control panel and put it someplace safe. Once you patch it, it's patched, and you'll have to replace it with the original file to get the old, boring icons back (if you ever want to, that is.)
3) Double-click the "Kaleidoscope Patch" to launch the patcher.
4) A dialog box will appear. Read the information in the window, and click the "Patch" button to begin.
5) You will prompted to locate the original Kaleidoscope control panel--navigate to Kaleidoscope (inside the Control Panels folder, within the System folder), select it, and click the "Patch" button (or just double-click its name.)
6) Once the patch has been applied, Restart your computer and enjoy the new icons!
The Five Most Frequently Asked Questions:
What does the patch do?
My Kaleidoscope Patch will replace all the folder icons included within the Kaleidoscope control panel. This is sometimes necessary when using third-party menu enhancement utilities such as BeHierarchic.
Under MacOS8, and beginning with Kaleidoscope 1.7.2, the icons contained within the Kaleidoscope control panel are "ignored." However, on some people's systems, the icons under the Apple Menu were not changed (seemingly) by my Appearance Extension Patch. The reason usually has something to do with the aforementioned "problem" with third-party menu enhancements.
Patching the Kaleidoscope control panel alleviates these problems.
How does the patch work?
Without getting too technical, my patch basically compares the existing Kaleidoscope control panel with the information stored within the patch. Since my patch contains only the resources that make up folder icons, only the folder icon resources in the Kaleidoscope control panel are replaced--the patch looks for identical resource numbers, and swaps the old icons with the new icons in my patch.
Why the Kaleidoscope control panel?
Beginning with Kaleidoscope 1.7.2, Greg Landweber has KAL ignore the icon resources contained within the KAL control panel. However, under certain circumstances (like using a third-party menu utility enhancement like BeHierarchic), the icons under the Apple Menu would appear in their standard "Kaleidoscope format"--even if the scheme being used contained it's own custom icon resources. The only solution I have found is to replace the icons contained within the KAL control panel.
I thought icon replacement was the purpose of your Appearance Extension Patch. What gives?
The Appearance Extension Patch replaced all the system's Finder icons. But, when using Kaleidoscope and some third party menu enhancements, various icons (such as those under the Apple Menu) remained seemingly unchanged by the patch. But this was actually the icons built into the Kaleidoscope control panel overriding the icons of the Appearance Extension. So...in order to fully replace ALL the icons (if you're using Kaleidoscope, that is), the Kaleidoscope icons had to be replaced, or patched.
Maury's Kaleidoscope Patch does this--used in conjunction with my Appearance Patch--giving your Mac a total, uniform appearance.
Is this patch dangerous? Is it going to mess-up my Mac?
My patch is totally safe, if you follow the directions and use common sense: Always work with a copy! If you edit the one and only original of anything, you've lost its original form. If you edit a copy instead, all you have to do is replace the edited version with the original to get back to where you started.
